Beautiful post, James. I'd like to add that many awesome things evolve through exaptation. You do something for some sake (or no sake at all) and suddenly it fits something completely different. It opens a gate that could've never opened had we not played or tried to build something. And as we're always involved in the process of becoming, one can't think of something more important than experimenting and figuring things out playfully.

That reminds me of the classic Steve Jobs anecdote about him taking a calligraphy class and how that shaped Apples design fundamentals. A chain of events that come through experimentation and chasing your interests, despite how random that might initially appear to be.
